Above any Works result set, you will see an export button that you can click to download a file with OpenAlex's data about works. There are three different file formats to choose from:
-
-
Spreadsheet (.csv) — CSV (comma-separated values) file that can be used by spreadsheet applications like Microsoft Excel. This flattens the copious data that make up the works into a large number of columns.
- "Shorten column values for Excel compatibility" — Excel has limitations in the length of data values, so a standard export can cause errors. If you plan to use Excel to work with the data you're exporting, check this feature so that any cells that exceed these limits will be truncated and the errors will be avoided (at the expense of data loss).
- Endnote format (.ris) — RIS format that can be used by reference managers like Endnote or Zotero.
- Text format (.txt) — A text-based export format. This format is generally compatible with the export format used by Web of Science and Dimensions, although of course you'll be exporting our data, not theirs.

When you export the results, the system prepares the file for you, and gives you a download link to click on when it's ready. For large results sets, this can take several minutes. The maximum number of works you can export this way is 100,000.
