In OpenAlex, publishers are identified with a unique Publisher ID, starting with a P (e.g., P4310320595). You can find this number a few different ways in OpenAlex.
- from openalex.org search the name of the publisher in the search bar, if it appears either click on the entity or on the (i) button to the right of the entity
- the publisher ID will be the end of the URL (starting with a p)
- from the openalex.org/works page, click on the blue + symbol near the top left and select the 'Publisher' filter.
- search among all publishers, or choose from the top publishers
- once you click to add the publisher as a filter, the publisher ID will be the end of the URL (starting with a p)
- from any search on the openalex.org/works page, under stats on the right, click + and then under 'more', select "publisher'
- a Publisher stats widget will appear in your reports, from that you can select your Publisher or select 'more' to search for your publisher
- once you click to add the publisher as a filter, the publisher ID will be the end of the URL (starting with a p)
- from a journal's entity page (e.g., OpenAlex | Journal of Phycology), clicking on the hyperlinked Publisher field will take you to the Publisher's entity page. the end of the URL will contain the publisher ID, starting with a p
- if that field is empty, you may need to find the publisher using methods 1-3. you can also help OpenAlex update that record to include the Publisher, using this curation form
Note: many publishers can act as Publishers, Funders, and Institutions whose researchers publish. If the number you find using the steps above beings with an i or an f, you need to visit their entity page and then use the dropbox at the top of the page to select "publisher". The URL will now be updated with the publisher ID. For instance, go to OpenAlex | RELX Group (United Kingdom) to find publications by authors who work for this publisher. At the top left, click "institution' to pull down the drop-down menu and select "publisher". The URL will update with the Publisher ID.
